YAY!!! I would like to congratulate you on your efforts to stop drinking soda! I would also like to congratulate you on researching WHY you don't want to drink soda anymore (you are much like myself in this way!). Great post! I am a firm believer that a lot of our nation's health-care issues can be minimized through preventative health measures. Smart nutrition and dietary guidance can hopefully help to alleviate many costly and deadly health issues.

It seems that the current health treatment model in the United States is to treat symptoms instead of cure the root of the problem. Nutrition can help balance out internal problems that may be the root of dietary deficiencies that are treated with prescription drugs instead of eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruits.

I too am a college student and experience these pressures on a day to day basis -- I'm sure a lot of people and parents out there are unaware of this adderall phenomenon...lets hope they do some research or stumble upon your blog before they are quick to hand out prescriptions.

Check out the hypothesis that worm infections can reduce things like IBS. The idea is that the immune system makes poor choices if there are no eukaryotes to chew on. I've seen studies that have helped auto immunity with a few worms in the gut. I've been up to the field station at Mountain Lake, beautiful country, tons of social amoebae up there. (I know your mom from UM - she mapped our whole hallway based on interactions, a sociology natural).

Hi Linden! I've known your mother since before she was your age. I can't say we ate too healthily back then, though I've always been a big fan of beans, pinto, black, garbanzo, white, you name it. Went real well with a whiskey called Pleasant Moments if memory serves.
I'm very interested in the high incidence of auto-immune diseases, and possible ties to not getting enough exposure to eukaryote parasites like worms. I even read a treatment where they gave someone a few worms, tapeworms, hookworms, things like that, and they helped a lot against some kinds of AI diseases like IBS. Maybe you can check it out and write on it for your blog!
